Field notes

The notebook follows the physical order of a gilding job: sealed wood, coarse and fine gesso, bol, leaf, burnishing, protection, and repair. It records constraints that are easy to omit from general craft writing, including gold leaf around one or two tenths of a micron thick, the distinction between loose and transfer leaf, and the effects of humidity, airflow, alloy, and surface preparation.
