La Verdad Ambiental Tests Mining Against Fires
A Colombian data-journalism project investigates environmental claims by crossing public records, satellite imagery, and statistical tests.
Field notes
The project builds each case by joining Colombia's mining cadastre with NASA VIIRS and MODIS heat detections, then testing both municipal patterns and distances from individual heat points to mining polygons. Its Tolima case covers 578 applications, 270 active titles, and 255 heat points recorded over seven days. The homepage reports that 22 of 47 municipalities contain both signals, while two statistical tests find no significant general relationship; deforestation and water-resource cases remain in data collection.
