The visualization combines two layers: hollow markers for Holocene volcanoes and filled, VEI-coded circles for eruptions in the selected period. Its controls can show a single year, rolling five-year window, decade, or all events up to a chosen year, with playback from 1900 onward. The accompanying text explains why activity clusters along subduction zones, rifts, and hotspots, and gives scale examples ranging from VEI 2 to Tambora’s VEI 7.
