Bearing Witness: Mapping the Photographers of 9/11
An interactive map reconstructing where photographers and film crews were in Lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001, and what they captured.
Field notes
The map separates movement timelines from fixed vantage points and assigns each position a confidence level: confirmed, reconstructed, or estimated. It uses a circa-2001 New York aerial basemap, while noting that the World Trade Center site imagery shows the cleared site during recovery rather than the standing towers. The project currently lists 10 people and points readers toward larger collections, including the ICP archive’s 1,500-plus objects and the September 11 Digital Archive’s 150,000-plus files.
