Clift Station Cemetery — The People and Their Story
A documented history of a historic Black burial ground on Lookout Mountain, tracing named people, burial records, preservation evidence, and a 1915 court case.
Field notes
The project organizes twenty-one named people into documented burials, probable or ambiguous cases, and retained research leads. Three are currently documented at Clift Station itself, while three others are associated with Lookout Mountain without a named cemetery. Its central identity question compares a 1915 death certificate, a 1939 WPA transcription, and a handwritten list; the site explicitly keeps the two name variants separate until a census record and original marker reading provide further confirmation.
