A computational art project uses a traced male fruit-fly nervous system to steer a brush across a canvas.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-12 issue.

Field notes

Canvas Fly maps a 256-pixel patch of canvas through 892 retinotopic optic-lobe columns before running the stated 165,122-neuron male fruit-fly connectome in 10 ms windows. Named descending neurons steer direction and brush lifts, while activity across the central brain, medulla, ventral nerve cord, and Kenyon cells controls colour. The studio currently reports no finished sittings; the project states that completed sessions will be hashed, minted on Robinhood Chain, and listed on OpenSea.
