Hanzen Turns Chinese Characters into Tiny Movies

hanzen.app Observed source
Editorial interest 84/100 Selection signal · not a rating of the site

A Chinese-learning app breaks characters into sounds, places, tones, and props, then turns the pieces into memorable scenes.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-16 issue.

Field notes

The mnemonic system uses a fixed grammar: initial sounds select recurring actors, ending sounds select places, tones select locations inside those places, and character components become props. The homepage gives 妈 (mā) as an example, casting a woman and a horse in a doorway scene, and describes a library of more than 3,000 characters. A companion browser extension is presented for captioned Chinese YouTube videos, with line looping, speed control, and timed transcripts.
