The American Engineering Gap Index
An interactive 50-state index compares engineering and computer science degrees as a share of bachelor’s degrees against international benchmarks.
- For
- Readers comparing U.S. engineering education by state
- Worth noticing
- Maryland is the sole state above half of the 33.2% China benchmark, at 20.9%.
Field notes
The state view combines a three-year degree-share trend, institutional contributors, and projected annual engineering and computing openings, extending the comparison beyond a national headline. The inputs are not all from the same year: U.S. figures use IPEDS through provisional 2024–25 data, while the cited international compilation is from 2020 and China’s figure is from 2022; the methodology also notes category differences for Japan and France.
